Whale Watching FAQ & Helpful Information
Why choose this Sydney whale watching cruise?
The cruise combines an open-ocean whale watching experience with views of Sydney’s most famous harbour landmarks. Passengers travel aboard a purpose-built vessel with live marine commentary, indoor and outdoor seating, accessible facilities and a whale sighting guarantee.
What types of whales may be seen?
Humpback whales are the species most frequently seen during Sydney’s annual migration. Southern Right Whales and Minke Whales may also be encountered, while Blue Whales and Orcas are considered rare sightings. Dolphins, seals, penguins and seabirds may also appear during the cruise.
How close will the vessel get to the whales?
The vessel follows Australian whale watching regulations and maintains the required approach distance. This is generally between 100 and 300 metres, depending on the whales present, whether calves are nearby and the number of vessels in the area. Whales may occasionally choose to swim closer to the vessel.
What should I bring?
Passengers should bring a warm jacket, sunscreen, sunglasses, a secure hat and a camera or smartphone. Dressing in layers is recommended because conditions can be cooler and windier outside Sydney Harbour.
Is live commentary included?
Yes. Live commentary is provided by experienced marine guides who explain the migration, identify whale behaviours and share information about the marine environment.
Can passengers experience seasickness?
The cruise travels into open water, where ocean movement may be noticeable. Eating a light meal beforehand, taking suitable motion sickness medication before departure and looking towards the horizon may help reduce discomfort. Avoid reading or looking at a screen while the vessel is moving.
Are whale sightings guaranteed?
Whales are seen on more than 95% of scheduled cruises. When no whale is sighted, eligible passengers can join another whale watching cruise free of charge during the same season. Conditions apply.
When is the best time to see whales in Sydney?
June and July are generally popular for the northern migration. August can provide energetic displays from younger whales. September and October are known for the southern migration as whales travel back towards Antarctic waters.
Is the morning or afternoon cruise better?
Morning departures are often preferred because sea conditions may be calmer. Conditions can change daily, so passengers should check the latest weather and ocean forecast before travelling.
What happens when a cruise is cancelled?
When the operator cancels a cruise because of weather, sea conditions or operational requirements, passengers may be offered an alternative departure, a refund from their original place of purchase or a travel credit, depending on the booking conditions. Bookings made through another travel agent remain subject to that agent’s terms.
Can I bring food and drinks?
Yes. Passengers may bring their own food and non-alcoholic drinks onboard.
Is the vessel wheelchair accessible?
The whale watching vessels include wheelchair-accessible areas and bathroom facilities. However, Commissioner’s Steps, used as the temporary departure point from 20 July until 28 August 2026, are not wheelchair accessible. Contact +61-3-9988-2277 before booking to discuss accessibility requirements.
Are bathrooms available onboard?
Yes. Bathroom facilities are available onboard, including accessible facilities.
Are seats assigned?
No. Seating is open plan and not assigned. Passengers can use the indoor seating areas or move to the outdoor viewing decks when conditions permit.
Is the cruise suitable for children?
Yes. The experience is suitable for families, although children must remain under adult supervision. Discounted fares are available for children aged 4 to 15. Infants aged 0 to 3 travel free but are not recommended for an open-ocean cruise. A minimum of one supervising adult is required for every four children, or part thereof.
Where does the cruise depart?
The normal departure point is Circular Quay Wharf 6. From 20 July until 28 August 2026, cruises depart from Commissioner’s Steps, approximately 170 metres towards the Sydney Harbour Bridge from Wharf 6. Passengers can still check in at the ticket office near Wharf 6.
What should I do before travelling?
Check the latest weather and sea conditions, eat lightly before departure and take motion sickness medication in advance when required. On the morning of travel, call +61-3-9988-2277 from 7:15am to reconfirm the departure details.
What route does the cruise take?
The vessel departs Circular Quay, cruises past the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge, travels through Sydney Heads and continues into the open ocean before returning to Circular Quay.
Where can I get parking information?
